What We Do

Mentoring Programs

Traditional Match

You don't have to change your life to change theirs!

The Traditional Match Program includes Big Brothers, Sisters, Couples and Families.  Volunteers are matched with a child between the ages of 6 and 18. The Big and Little spend two to three hours, once a week participating in low cost activities. Activities may include tossing a football, biking, cooking and having fun! Together you can enjoy everyday activities, share favourite pastimes and create new adventures.

In-School Mentoring

One child. One hour. One unforgettable experience.

Mentors visit a child at an elementary school for one hour each week during the school year. Together you and your mentee focus on learning through fun social, recreational and educational activities such as crafts, board games or playing sports. The first goal is to have fun!

Corporate Volunteerism

BBBS Hamilton & Burlington encourages employers to give employees time during the work day to volunteer... studies show that people who volunteer perform better on the job! By encouraging and supporting volunteerism, employers:

  • Demonstrate leadership in the community.
  • Attract future employees due to enhanced image in the community.
  • Benefit from the satisfaction, heightened morale, increased loyalty, and improved self esteem of employees who volunteer.
  • Assist in the development of an educated, skilled workforce for the future.
  • Help change the lives of youth in the community.

SOAR

Social Opportunities Activities and Relationships (SOAR) is a group mentoring program matching volunteers with children who are currently waiting for a Big Brother, Sister, Couple or Family.  Mentors drive 2 or 3 children, one night a week, and accompany them to a pre-determined community activity like swimming, horseback riding, community tours and movies.

As a SOAR mentor you will have fun out in the community, meet new friends and help children reach their full potential. Each session lasts 12 weeks and runs on Tuesday or Thursday nights from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

The SOAR program is supported in part by the City of Hamilton/WCB Program.

Go Girls! Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds

This is a mentoring program designed to encourage participation in physical activity, healthy eating choices, and the development of a positive self-image in girls aged 12 to 14.

Adolescence can be tough - especially for girls who are facing today's complicated world! Acting as role models, female volunteers (Mentors) support the girls by addressing the emotional, social and cultural issues they may be facing. The program takes place once a week for seven weeks during which time the participants take part in fun and active games, healthy snack breaks and discussions aimed at developing self esteem.
